Shitōzu are an ancient form of Japanese cloth footwear, often regarded as an early predecessor to modern socks and tabi.

Their construction is remarkably simple: two pieces of fabric wrap around the foot, secured with ties at the ankle.

It was this simplicity that caught our attention.

Reinterpreted through goyemon’s perspective and brought into the present through modern technology.

unda TEGU / Shitōzu PROTOTYPE

Alongside the main release, we are also offering a prototype born during the development process.

Built on the classic unda CLEAR TOUGH BLACK, the original upper has been replaced with CORDURA® ripstop.

Like the main model, the woven label and drawcord feature reflective detailing. The prototype is distinguished by a vivid orange drawcord.

By introducing new materials and details to the familiar form of unda, the prototype preserves the experimental character of the development process.

Japanese design firm goyemon has reinterpreted the traditional woven bamboo sandal, the “Setta“, and introduced modern technology to make them more comfortable to wear.

Invented in the 16th century, the setta is meant to be worn under poor weather conditions. Attached to the sole of the traditional footwear is a layer of leather which helps to keep the feet away from puddles and snow. Dubbed “Unda,” the modernized version features cushioned footbeds and midsole bubble units serving to buffer the strain from walking while logo-appliqued tags detail the heels.
