Shitōzu are an ancient form of Japanese cloth footwear, often regarded as an early predecessor to modern socks and tabi.

Their construction is remarkably simple: two pieces of fabric wrap around the foot, secured with ties at the ankle.

It was this simplicity that caught our attention.

Reinterpreted through goyemon’s perspective and brought into the present through modern technology.

unda TEGU / Shitōzu

The foot is enclosed in a bag-like upper made from translucent polyurethane film.
Through its smoky grey surface, the construction beneath is subtly revealed.

The footbed features MU-TECH®, a three-layer performance nylon engineered for lightness, durability, and breathability.
Its mini ripstop construction adds resilience for everyday wear.

The thong is finished in velvet, a material traditionally used in setta sandals. Its off-white tone emerges softly through the smoky translucent upper, revealing the presence of the setta within.

A drawcord and adjuster at the opening allow the fit to be refined as needed.
Both the drawcord and woven label feature reflective detailing.

Underfoot, a full-length air sole extends all the way to the toe. Paired with the translucent upper, it gives the silhouette a distinctly technical character.

“ unda ”
Japanese design firm goyemon has reinterpreted the traditional woven bamboo sandal, the “Setta“, and introduced modern technology to make them more comfortable to wear.

Invented in the 16th century, the setta is meant to be worn under poor weather conditions. Attached to the sole of the traditional footwear is a layer of leather which helps to keep the feet away from puddles and snow. Dubbed “Unda,” the modernized version features cushioned footbeds and midsole bubble units serving to buffer the strain from walking while logo-appliqued tags detail the heels.
